Unfortunately the old thread on this show was locked. I'm breaking down and making a new one because of a conversation started with Bryan in the Kid's TV thread. I love this show in all it's forms, and wanted to continue talking about it without alienating others who wanted to talk about other shows.
The story of how this show this show became a part of my life is in the afore-mentioned thread for anyone who's interested enough to look.
To BryanP22: Lol, whiny and petulant I remember and think funny as well. Sinister can be good, but among the things I preferred about the original cartoon was Shredder and Splinter's backstory. I know that probably the only reason it was changed was 'cause you can't talk about murder most fowel on a cartoon meant for young children, but the reason I prefer it is because I feel it added more genuine human interest, especially to Splinter (Hamato Yoshi). I don't know, I feel like it gave them a more personal reason to be enemies. As I said to one author on fanfiction.net, it kinda felt similar to a Dumbledore/Tom Riddle type of relationship to me.
Anyway, my point in the rambling is that if I'm going to accept this explination for Shredder, then it follows that I'll have to accept the evil but slightly bumbling and imperfect, more human Shredder. That, and the fact that he's human and has a sense of humor means that he's not pure evil and maybe just a little bit redemeable, and I'm a sucker for antagonistic characters with redeming qualities.

Anyway, more generally, I can't wait to see what the new series is like! I think it'll be good, myself. Only major disappointment is what they did with April, but maybe her character's portrayal will be good enough to make up for it.

It's also interesting to note the difference in Raph's personality betwee the cartoon and the movies and comics. Because in the cartoon e's always got some sort of smart ass comment for just about any situation. Then you look at his comic/film persona, where he's much more angry and brooding and at times reckless. In fact that almost gets him killed on several occasions.

Post 3 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 16-Dec-2011 11:02:10

Yeah, his personality in the 2003 cartoon and the Next Mutation, (that show doesn't get enough attention in fandom if you ask me), is closer to that as well. I gotta say I prefer that angry, complex Raph. It's not that I don't appreciate fairly innocent smartass sarcasm, and I adore most of Rob Paulsen's work, but there's just so much more to the darker Raph. And he does have a softer side, which is rarely seen but sweet.

Post 4 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Friday, 16-Dec-2011 12:25:58

I got the feeling Next Mutation wasn't very successful. I remember it wasn't on for long. And I agree I like the darker Raph. And you see his softer side in the third film when he befriends a Japanese boy named Yoshi after he and the other turtles are accidentally sent back in time by a magical scepter April picked up at a garage sale or something.

Post 5 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 16-Dec-2011 12:36:06

Yoshi, hmmm? Only seen the first 2 movies. As for tender Raph moments that I liked, there're 2 episodes that come to mind. One was in the second season called Lone Raph and Cub, and there was one I think in the third season, Touch and Go. The focus was supposed to be on Mikey and Splinter and the goons they were dealing with, but they were really quite poor excuses for villains, and what was going on with Raph was more interesting, lol.

And yes, Next Mutation was only one season, and there were aspects about it that were silly or not that well-done, but there were still things about it I liked.

I only saw a bit of it here and there but I just couldn't get into the fifth turtle. Venus something, Venus Demilo I think her name was.

Post 7 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Saturday, 17-Dec-2011 7:07:35

Yeah, I heard a lot of people don't like her. Not really sure why though. I mean she, like the show, had some problems and wasn't perfectly developed or written, but she was alright. I've seen all but the last episode. I actually found it and started watching it by mistake, believing it was the 2003 series, and I got very confused at one point, lol.
My main disappointment was the lack of April. I tried to make up for this by invisioning it as a prequel to the 03 series, but I don't know if the designs for the turtles were similar enough for that to be true. I know that NM was live action, which is cool as I've always been drawn to puppet shows.

my cousin got me into tmnt when I was a kid.

Post 9 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Saturday, 25-Feb-2012 17:45:38

Hi, it's good to see someone else posting to this thread! lol I guess based on your birth date in your profile that you watched the 03 version over anything else? So who is or was your favorite turtle? Do you have a favorite episode or moment?

Post 10 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 27-Feb-2012 21:11:30

my cousin was older, so I had vhss of the 1987 version. my favorite is donatello. as for favorite momenbs, Mine would be when april is scen with a robocop-like robot, who appearently has a crush on her.

Post 11 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 01-Mar-2012 0:48:50

Oh yes, lol, I love that one too. Forget the name of the episode off hand though. It seems Don is everyone's favorite; he's mine as well!

Post 12 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Sunday, 04-Mar-2012 18:31:50

I think it was cawabunga shreadhead.

Post 13 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Tuesday, 06-Mar-2012 14:38:43

Nope, that wasn't it. I just looked it up; it's New York's Shiniest.

Post 14 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 06-Mar-2012 22:20:46

Yup. Cowabunga Shredhead was the one where Splinter tried to use hypnosis to cure Michaelangelo of his fondness for pizza but in the process accidentally hypnotized Shhredder so that every time he heard the word Michaelangelo he would start acting like him.

Post 15 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Wednesday, 07-Mar-2012 9:34:07

oh. I got those 2 confused lately.

Post 16 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 15-Mar-2012 15:18:09

Yup. You just couldn't say Shredder around him or he'd turn back. In fact I think he accidentally turned himself back once. Hey there's still cheese left in this shredder...shredder...shredder...shredder...

Post 17 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 15-Mar-2012 16:29:14

ever seen the show's cousin, "whild west cowboys of moo masa"? It is very similar, but the characters are gyant plants.

Post 18 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Wednesday, 21-Mar-2012 22:54:49

Can't say that I have.

Post 19 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 22-Mar-2012 7:26:11

it's that obscure. I only heard of the game adaptation until recently.

Post 20 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 09-Jul-2012 15:56:42

So what are everyone's expectations for the new series? I'm a bit worried about how they'll portray April, and wasn't happy at all when I heard they were making her younger. I'm more worried about Splinter though, as they're also making him younger. I hope it isn't too young!
On the bright side though I read that they're planning to address other aspects of the ninja lifestyle besides fighting, so I'm hoping I'll learn something! lol I saw the previews that were given, and I think Leo and Don sound great! Opinions? Thoughts? Fears and hopes?

Post 21 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 09-Jul-2012 16:27:59

what? they are working on a new series? I gotta see!

Post 22 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Tuesday, 16-Oct-2012 17:34:26

Has anyone watched the new series? They've had 4 episodes so far, but I've only gotten to see the first and the most recent. For those who have, what do you think?

Post 23 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2012 11:04:12

I'm more interested in the original series. I wish they'd released the whole thing on DVD. I have the original three movies though, and wile I liked the first two better than the third one I still enjoyed them all. The newer one was ok but not as good as the ones from the 90's at least in my opinion.

Post 24 by Kathy Fraggle (Zone BBS is my Life) on Thursday, 15-Nov-2012 17:07:37

They've released season 10, and I believe they're releasing a box set of the full series including previously unreleased episodes.

Post 25 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 17-Nov-2012 11:37:56

Nice. I used to hate the show at first but I sort of got into it as my brother and sister watched it. I don't think I watced much if any of it though in the last couple seasons after Shredder and Krang were sent back to Dimension X. In fact I didn't even know the series continued after tat point until fairly recently.

Post 26 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Saturday, 17-Nov-2012 18:21:54

me neither. Although considering the disgrace that they made out of the modern day Thundercats, I don't think I want to find out what the new TMNT episodes are like.

Post 27 by LaneKeys (Resident Grungehead) on Sunday, 18-Nov-2012 8:36:38

I liked the original series quite a bit, particularly the first five because they were sequential. It's tough to do in a cartoon series, but I wished they'd made more multipart episodes like that.

Post 28 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 10-Dec-2012 12:58:16

I didn't see the new series yet, mainly because I live with my mother now who would rather watch dateline and similar shows.

Post 29 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 11-Dec-2012 18:37:56

I think my favorite was when that alien crashed on Earth and his ship was destroyed. But he had with him a powerful magical artifact that was also split into three pieces that, once united, would make the holder all but invincible. And of course Shredder ended up getting hold of the entire thing (the Eye of Zarnov I think it was called), and it actually turned out to be so powerful that he couldn't control it and I think it almost killed him before the turtles managed to destroy it.

Post 30 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Wednesday, 12-Dec-2012 8:58:53

my favorite is the one with the robotic cop (I think he was inspired by robocop). he is interviewed by april (the news anker) and ends up having a crush on her.

Post 31 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 27-Jul-2013 23:31:32

Ah yes, I remember that one too. Those were the days when cartoons were actually worth watching.

Post 32 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Monday, 02-Sep-2013 16:02:26

this was one of the few cartoons where the video game adaptations, from a critic's perspective, were awsum. in fact, screw attack named tmnt4 (turtles in time) as the best cartoon-based video game, and the original tmnt as the ninth hardest nes game worth playing.

Post 33 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Saturday, 30-Nov-2013 11:33:50

It was certainly hard. I only wish they'd actually used the TMNT music the way they did in the rest of the series.

Post 34 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Tuesday, 03-Dec-2013 8:00:43

I liked the Nintendo game.

Post 35 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Tuesday, 03-Dec-2013 20:27:54

I liked the sequels better than the first one. Way cooler music.

Post 36 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 09-Jan-2014 13:19:23

One thing I never realized until now despite watching all three shows as a kid is that Raphael from the original TMNT cartoon, Yakko Warner from Animaniacs and Pinky from Animaniacs and later Pinky and the Brain were all voiced by the same guy, Rob Paulsen. LOL.

Post 37 by Espking (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 01-Aug-2014 19:09:25

also, leanardo's voice actor, camb clark, went on to appear in over 100 (!) video games!

Post 38 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Monday, 13-Oct-2014 12:57:53

Yup, among them Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. GOod old Cam Clarke.
